The Melody of Stories (T.M.o.S) - A Griot's Library
Synopsis
The Melody of Stories - A Griot’s Library (T.M.o.S) is a building within the Institute of African Diaspora and African Futures (I.A.D.A.F)
framework. It is a beautiful concept that draws on concepts from cultural African narratives while implementing sustainable
construction techniques into the design.
A Griot is a west African storyteller. The proposal features a grand library in the centre of the building, housing books on various African
related topics. The library is neighboured by schools of Art, Music and Film. Their forms are inspired by several African dieties. The
premise is that people from around the world are invited to create stories through Art, Music and Film and these stories are exhibited,
showcased or performed in amphitheatres situated within the building.
The building form is inspired by the fact that stories are told underneath the canopy of trees in parts of Africa. The elements within the
building are canopied by a leaf-like ETFE roof supported by a tree-inspired structural system.
